Materials relate to the construction of the Merrill and McCourtie Block at 146-148 South Burdick in Kalamazoo, Mich., 1885-1886, including a contract between David Merrill and William McCourtie with William A. Doyle who was to build the building. The contract gives specific guidelines for the building, conditions for how the contractor would be paid and penalties if the work was not completed on time. The contract was signed on September 28, 1885 and work was to be completed by December 1886. The second contract, dated September 28, 1885, is between William A. Doyle, T.S. Cobb and E. Woodbury stating what Doyle and Merrill and McCourtie would be responsible for during the construction. Also included is a single sheet from the Kalamazoo city clerk, March 23, 1886, instructing Merrill and McCourtie to pay $263.24 for window glass and a receipt from the city clerk's office for delivery of the glass, January 26, 1886
